WEYMOUTH ELDER SUPPORT COUNCIL   (WESC)

How did this organization begin and what is its mission?

Healthbridge Management Company, Concord, MA. owns 14 communities in Massachusetts. At each Healthbridge facility, the Community Marketing Liaison is asked to form a council of community members in each of their towns with a simple mission:

Identify the areas of need for our local seniors and provide support

WESC held its first meeting in April 2009 hosted at Weymouth Health Care Center. Its membership has grown to 15 members and is comprised of individuals representing benevolent groups, health care agencies, municipalities, elder care  professionals/stakeholders and business owners in the Weymouth community.

How often does the council meet?

Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month at noon, a working luncheon and last 1 ½ hours. The group does not meet in July,. August and December. and meetings are usually hosted at Weymouth Health Care.

What do the members bring to the council?

They bring together an in-depth range of knowledge and expertise and have been collaborating on a network of opportunities for serving elders in the town..

How has WESC communicated  their message to the senior community?

Susan Barnes, Director of Weymouth Elder Services and the members developed a survey inquiring about what particular needs  the seniors had in the areas of light chores and help with staying independent.  Susan designed a survey sheet and wrote an article for the senior monthly newsletter “Horizons”.   WESC will also be advertising on cable TV, press releases  in community papers, Healthy Wey web site, BOSS website, The Mayors monthly forum and The Phyllis Show on Channel 10 Cable .
